Infineon, NXP, and Renesas were the leading automotive semiconductor manufacturers worldwide in 2021. Infineon's market share was estimated at around 12.7 percent. The total market in 2021 was sized at around 46.7 billion U.S. dollars.

Cars containing more electronics than before

Over the past decades, the use of electronic components in cars has increased dramatically. While in 1970, electronics made up only five percent of the total car, this share rose to 35 percent in 2010. The cars of today are equipped with advanced electronic systems that make our cars safer, more reliable, and more comfortable than ever before. Moreover, thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), components in a car can communicate with one another, as well as with other cars and devices, creating a network of connected vehicles bringing new possibilities.

Electronic components defects in vehicles

On the other hand, electronic systems can break or malfunction, and their repair requires specialized knowledge and skills. In 2019, half of all vehicle recalls were caused by an electronic component failure, up from just five percent in 2011. Almost 15 million cars were recalled due to an electronic component failure in 2019, the main reason for these recalls being software remedy.
